THE 3 ESSAY PROMPTS — PICK ONE
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Write 500+ words on one of these:

  1. What does a "bright future" look like for you?

Wide open intentionally. Career goals, community vision, climate, innovation — own it. The strongest essays here are specific and personal.

  1. How have you shown leadership or charity in your community?

Don't list everything you've done. Tell one specific story — one moment that actually meant something.

  1. How can we ensure fair and affordable housing for all Canadians?

This one hits close to home for a lot of GTA families. CMHC projects a shortfall of 3.5 million homes by 2030. If your family has lived through rising rents or delayed homeownership, you already have a perspective most applicants don't.

6 TIPS TO WRITE A WINNING ESSAY
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Here's what most students miss — committees read hundreds of entries. They remember the ones that feel real.

  1. Start with a scene, not a statement. Don't open with "I believe affordable housing is important." Open with a moment — something you saw, heard, or lived. That's what earns attention in the first 10 seconds.

  2. Pick the prompt you actually care about. It shows. Every time.

  3. Write at least 600 words. The requirement is 500, but hitting exactly 500 usually means a rushed conclusion. Give yourself room to make a point and land it properly.

  4. Be specific, not broad. "Canada needs more affordable housing" is a headline. "Increasing purpose-built rental density near transit corridors" is an argument. Committees know the difference.

  5. Write like yourself. A clear, honest voice beats formal language every single time.

  6. Proofread out loud. You'll catch things your eyes skip. Get a parent or teacher to do one final read before you submit.

A QUICK NOTE FROM ME
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Scholarships aren't just about money. They build the habit of putting your ideas into words under pressure — one of the most underrated skills a student can develop before university.

A $1,000 win doesn't cover tuition. But it covers a semester of textbooks, a month of groceries, or transit passes for a year. For a lot of families, that's not nothing.

More than the money — applying pushes students to form a real opinion, write it clearly, and put their name behind it. That's a skill that pays dividends long after the scholarship is gone.

Share this with your teen. Encourage them to apply. The effort alone is worth it.
